What is a good reason to try a new wine? Aside from “just because” or “why not”, there are so many reasons. Trying new wines is an adventure with so many differences in each and every one to discover. The same grape from vineyard to vineyard, year to year, region to region can have such a range of flavor. Multiply that by all the different grapes and blends. It is a taste journey of the world. The next one you try could be a new favorite or a delicious one to enjoy again.
My reason today is to try a Chilean wine. Over this past weekend, I found out about a twitter chat on Wednesdays, #WineChat, and the subject this week is wines from Chile. (The chat is at 9pm ET for those wine lovers on twitter). Today I went out and purchased a Chilean Carmenere. I should have done more homework about the chat before shopping. I found out after I got home the chat is specifically about Chilean Cabernet. Oh well. I still had a new wine to try.
Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Reserve Carmenere 2009 is the wine I purchased and tasted. I am so glad I did! After a very hot summer and a recent drought, the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee came through and brought rain and cooler temperatures. It feels like a fall day; drizzly and rainy and about 65 degrees. This wine is perfect for the weather. It is full of dark fruits, spice, and a hint of chocolate flavors. It has a warm feeling. It is not too tannic and is easy sipping with or without food. I will purchase this wine again and enjoy it throughout fall and into winter.
Have you tasted any Chilean wines? I would recommend Casillero del Diablo Camenere. The price is around $10 which makes it a good everyday wine. Enjoy it on a fall day with friends or family. It would be great with hearty dishes. Cheers!
