Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar divided
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder divided
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/4 cup hot strong-brewed coffee

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. Whisk together 3/4 cup sugar, flour, 1/4 cup cocoa, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add milk, butter, and vanilla. Stir to combine. Spread evenly in prepared pan.
  4. Whisk together 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and 1/4 cup cocoa in a small bowl. Sprinkle evenly over batter.
  5. Combine water and coffee. Gently pour over top. Do not mix.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until center is almost set. Let cool 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm.
