Ingredients

  • 4 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 garlic cloves chopped
  • 1 stalk celery chopped in 1-inch pieces
  • 1 small carrot chopped in 1-inch pieces
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1/2 small green bell pepper chopped
  • 2 cans crushed tomatoes 28 ounces each
  • 1 box Pomi tomato sauce 17.64 ounces
  • 2 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 bay leaves

Instructions

  1. Put basil, garlic, celery, carrot, onion and green pepper in a blender. Add a little water (about 1/2 cup) and blend on high until smooth. In a large soup pot or dutch oven, add blended and remaining ingredients. Stir to combine. Bring to a low boil then turn down the heat to low. Cover loosely and simmer for at least 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Taste and add more salt or pepper if needed. Remove bay leaves before serving.

Recipe Notes

For a spicier sauce add some red pepper flakes. Add browned ground beef, pork, and/or turkey to make a meat sauce. If the sauce tastes too acidic you can add unsalted butter 1 tablespoon at a time until it rounds out the flavor (1 to 4 tablespoons).
