When did you start drinking red wine? Was it always a part of your life or did you transition to it? I did not start drinking red wine until my late 30’s. Before then I drank sweet wines; blush, pink, white, etc. I do not know what caused the change of taste. I found myself seeking something different and not sweet. I went to the wine store to look for a good beginner red wine. The wine guy at the store recommended I start with a Pinot Noir.
Red wine has been my choice ever since I enjoyed that first bottle of Pinot Noir. My taste in wine has grown and evolved since then. Because of my wine journey and taste transition, I understand when someone says they do not like red wine. Big, bold red wines are not easy to switch to when you are used to a very sweet wine with hardly any tannins. If someone asks what would be a good red wine to start with, I recommend Pinot Noir.
Pennywise Pinot Noir 2009 is certainly one for red wine beginners. It is produced by The Other Guys winery. This wine is so light, it is actually one of the lightest red wines I have ever seen. It is so clear you can see right through it in the glass. The cherry and fruit flavors are not too tart and the wine is very smooth and easy to drink. It is mild and would go with many dishes, especially a light salad. It sells for around $10 so it is great for everyday and for beginners. You will not be spending a lot of money on a wine for someone who is starting in the red wine world.
Which red wine was your first? Do you have one you keep on hand or recommend for red wine beginners? Comment below and let’s get the conversation going. Cheers!

hmm, i probably had my first glass of red wine at 23 or 24, i'd guess? for beginners, i usually recommend a fairly light red, like a pinot noir. personally, i love spicy zinfandels or rich cabernets, but those can be a bit much for a first-timer. =)

I am with you on the zinfandels and cabernets (plus a whole range of other reds). I still enjoy Pinot Noir and get a craving for it from time to time. I think I drink more of it in the summer since it is a bit lighter.
