Seghesio Rockpile Zinfandel

Seghesio Rockpile Zinfandel 2008

Special times call for special wines. Go beyond the ordinary, everyday wines to highlight an occasion. Splurge a little. For New Year’s Eve, I decided to open a bottle I had been saving for a while. I wanted to celebrate the last day of the year with a wine that reminded me of good times. I chose to open the bottle of Seghesio Rockpile Zinfandel 2008.

I purchased the bottle at the winery in Sonoma. It was one of the wineries my mother and I visited during our trip to Napa and Sonoma in August of 2010. Each year we go on a mother/daughter trip and that year I took her to my favorite US destination. I call it my “Adult Disneyland”. I am like a kid in a theme park there. I will go to as many wineries as I can each day. Yes, I start tasting wine at 10am as soon as the wineries open. And no, I do not drink and drive. That is what those spit buckets are there for….to be able to taste and to be safe.

The Seghesio Rockpile Zinfandel is big and bold. It has deep flavors of black raspberries and cherries. The minerality from the Rockpile AVA is very distinct. This zinfandel is full-bodied, juicy, complex, and not too tannic. Unfortunately, the 2008 is not showing available for purchase on the Seghesio website. They are offering the 2009 vintage for $38 plus shipping. Worth every penny. I rarely spend that amount of money on a bottle of wine. I would again for this zinfandel.

What is one of your favorite special wines? Did you enjoy one during the holidays? It sure does add to a celebration. Be sure to splurge some during the year. We can all use a little something special from time to time. Cheers!

Our New Years splurge bottle was a Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986 from my dad's collection, let's just say that's an extra special bottle =)

Be on the alert for Zinfandels made from fruit of the Rockpile AVA, as it is incomparable and always excellent. The Mauritson Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel 2009 is the cat's pajamas http://www.mauritsonwines.com/rockpilewines.php#1

I will have to put the Mauritson Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel on my wine shopping list. Always looking for a good wine.

I think I've had one of the vintages before...the bottle looks very familiar. I love zinfandels as well as petite shiraz. My parents are really big into wine so over the holidays we drank a few of the petite shiraz and cabernet sauvignons. Both very good, but the cabs are always heavy for me and I can only drink about 1 glass! I am just dying to go to Sonoma and Napa now that I am 21. It is one of my favorite places too! I would love to live there...

You have probably had the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel as it is widely available across the country. The Rockpile is limited and as far as I know sold only at the winery on via their tasting room online. Cabs also felt a bit "heavy" for me for a while but I have been drinking more of them lately.
