Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Pinot Noir 2009

Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Pinot Noir 2009

Germany produces wines other than whites like Riesling. Yes, it is true. While most of the German wine produced is white, there is also red. About 11% of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). German reds are difficult to find here in the states. I have looked for them in every wine shop and liquor store and usually come up empty handed. Then recently I went to a blogger meetup and wine tasting at Total Wine. It is there I found Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Pinot Noir 2009.

I saved the bottle for a special time. This past weekend I made rouladen, potato dumplings, green beans, cucumber salad, and rolls. It was the right time to open the bottle. A German meal deserves as German wine to go with it. It was a great match. At least it was for me. I sipped and thought about all the wines I had in Germany. It brought back so many good memories.

The wine is a light pale red color. It is different than most of the more reddish Pinots I am accustomed to drinking. The flavor is light and fruity. It is smooth and has a nice finish. I should have bought a few bottles and next time I will. It is priced around $15 which is a good value.

Have you tried any German red wine? I would highly recommend giving them a taste or two. You may be surprised at how much you like them. Cheers!

PS. Upcoming announcement for a special Sunday Supper event coming this week. Stay tuned…

Renee, I love a great Spatburgunder! And I agree, they are difficult to find. We are inundated with West Coast Pinot Noir {which I love} but I also love diversity. Luckily, I have a lot of friends who travel and the rule is to bring back as much wine as customs will allow! We had a tasting of a few 7euro Spatburgunder a year or so ago... the wines were brought back from Germany 6 years ago. The wines were spectacular!! Patience is the best virtue a wine collector can have. Cheers!

Yes, sometimes you have to wait and wait to find a wine you are wanting. It is worth the wait. Next time I go to Germany I will have to bring back more wine (or ship it from there).
