Baked Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce – #SundaySupper #Oscars Party

Baked Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce with Crostini

The Oscars is a long event. It starts early in the afternoon with previews, red carpet, and then the Academy Awards.  Over 8 hours of star gazing, fashion, entertainment, speeches, and awards. How to keep your stamina up? Lots of good eats is the answer. A variety of cocktails, wine, and appetizers will keep you fueled up for cheering on your favorites in the movie industry.

The #SundaySupper #Oscars Party is a virtual celebration.  A group of foodies has come together with a delectable assortment of hor d’oeurves and beverages for the extravaganza. I am honored to be a part of the group and excited to share our awards line-up:

  • Best Cocktail goes to Angie from Big Bears Wife with her Vanilla Whipped Creamsicle
  • Antipasto in a Leading Role goes to Jen from Juanitas Cocina with her Homemade Ricotta & Antipasto Platter
  • Appetizer in a Foreign Language goes to Rashmi from The Primlani Kitchen for her La Vita e’ Bella Crostini ~ Ricotta Roasted Squash & Sage Crostini Paired with Midnight in Paris Cocktail with Champagne Pomegranate
  • Appetizerography goes to Valerie from Val’s Food and Or Art with her Easy puffed Pastry with Brie & Goat Cheese Stuffing and Hugo in the Tropics Harry Navel
  • Appetizer in a Supporting Role goes to me with my Baked Goat Cheese in Tomato Sauce with Crostini (below)
  • Directing in the Kitchen goes to Liz from That Skinny Chick Can Bake with her Gourgeres and Cream Puffs, Parisian Cheese Puffs, Midnight in Paris
  • Animated Feature Appetizer goes to Nicole from The Daily Dish Recipes with her Garlic Chicken Puffs
  • Short Appetizer goes to Launie from Teeny Tiny Kitchen for her Tamari Chex Mix with Almonds
  • Appetizeriss in a Leading Role goes to Isabel from Family Foodie for her Intensity Academy Iron Shrimp

Baked Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce is super easy. Oh so tasty too. The warm, creamy goat cheese along with the tomato sauce on top of a crunchy bite of crostini is outrageous! It has few ingredients and only takes a couple of minutes to put together. I used some of my homemade tomato sauce. You can use store-bought if you do not have any homemade on hand or do not want to make the sauce. The crostini is quite easy too. Make it first and then give your oven a chance to cool down a bit before baking the goat cheese and sauce.

Which movie is your pick for Best Picture? I admit the only Oscar-nominated movie I have seen this year is “The Help”. That is why this post has a nod to it in the title. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was a great story and I love how food had such a large and important role in it. Is there any particular food scene most memorable to you – in “The Help” or another movie? I would love to hear about movies with great food moments…

Ingredients

For the Crostini

  • 1 baguette
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh cracked pepper

For the Baked Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce

  • 4 ounce goat cheese log
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • Red pepper flakes optional
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish optional

Instructions

For the Crostini:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Slice the baguette into 1/4 inch slices. Place slices on 2 sheet pans. Brush slices with olive oil. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Bake one sheet pan at a time for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool crostini on wire racks. Store in a large air-tight container or plastic zip-top bag.
  2. Note: Make this earlier in the day or the day before. The oven needs to be at a lower temperature for baking the appetizer.

For the Baked Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Slice the goat cheese log into four 1/2 inch rounds. Place them in a low-sided baking dish, pie plate, or au gratin dish. Spoon the tomato sauce around the goat cheese. Bake for about 20 minutes until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese has softened. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired. Serve warm with crostini.
  2. For a spicier sauce, stir 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes into the tomato sauce before adding into the baking dish.

I'd been my life savings not a single one of the 'stars' ate anything like this that day ;) Just lots of booze, and maybe a piece of lettuce or something. But really, they SHOULD eat this, it looks delicious!

Honestly my favorite part of the Oscars is the fashion, especially the Fashion Police. Love the commentary and recap on that show.
